See that? That’s the new Detroit Lions logo courtesy of ESPN.

I like it. I don’t love it. It’s a whole lot like the last logo. So much so that fans should still get by with the old jerseys. But even that’s not the biggest problem with this logo. It’s the timing.
Teams have been getting this for the last few years and getting it really well. Draft a superstar, give him a year or two, and then change the logo. Why? Because you get two rounds of jersey sales. Take Mike Vick for example. Vick was drafted in 2001, number one overall pick. Played in eight games in the first year with mediocre results. Year two he busts out, has an amazing year. 2003? Jersey switch. They got the draft hype and then the play hype. Well done. Wonder whatever happened to that guy?
Maybe the Lions got tired of waiting. After a decade of high draft choices that haven’t brought wins, maybe it was time. And maybe they needed some new life in the post-Matt Millen age. And maybe we should take this as refreshing: a team making a football decision instead of a money one.
Or maybe it’s the worst franchise in football continuing to be the worst.
